Private by default, readable on purpose.

LeftOff stores your saved place in the browser so it can restore the exact reading position when you come back. The goal is simple: keep your reading trail on-device, clear, and easy to understand.

Permissions

LeftOff currently requests these Chrome extension permissions:

  • contextMenus to add the Save to LeftOff action to the page context menu and an Open archive action on the extension button
  • storage to save leftovers in the browser
  • tabs to compare saved URLs with existing tabs so LeftOff can focus an already-open saved page instead of opening a duplicate, and to read the active page URL and title for save and badge behavior

The current manifest does not request optional permissions or host permissions outside its content-script scope.

Content Script Scope

The extension currently runs on normal web pages matching:

  • https://*/*
  • http://*/*

This broad host access lets LeftOff save and restore a reading position on the normal web page where you choose to use it. LeftOff uses this access only to identify the selected passage, store the restoration information locally, and restore that saved position when you return. It does not use this access to build an unrelated browsing history, analyze browsing for advertising, or transmit page content to a remote service.

What LeftOff Stores

To restore where you left off, LeftOff stores this data in chrome.storage.local:

  • the page URL
  • selected text
  • selected text context
  • DOM location metadata
  • scroll position
  • titles and timestamps used in the popup

The extension currently keeps this information on-device in the browser profile. LeftOff does not transmit saved leftovers to a remote server.

LeftOff does not sell this data, use it for advertising or credit decisions, share it with third parties, or allow the developer or other humans to read it. Data remains in the browser profile until the user deletes a saved place, uses Clear all, removes the extension data, or uninstalls the extension.

LeftOff uses this data to reopen a saved page and attempt to restore the selected reading position in a resilient way.

User-Facing Behavior

  • LeftOff only saves a position when the user highlights text and invokes Save to LeftOff from the context menu.
  • The extension button context menu can open the internal archive page without touching page content.
  • When a saved page is revisited, the content script attempts an automatic restore after page load when possible.
  • Restore may scroll the page, reselect saved text, or fall back to the stored scroll position.
  • The popup and archive page can reopen a saved page either with restore or as a plain tab focus/open action.
  • LeftOff does not run on restricted browser pages such as chrome://.

Chrome Web Store Limited Use

LeftOff's use of information received from Chrome APIs complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. LeftOff uses page URLs, selected page content, and restore metadata only to provide and improve its single purpose: saving and restoring a reading position chosen by the user.

LeftOff does not transfer this information to third parties, use it for personalized advertising, sell it, or permit humans to read it. The only exceptions would be when required by law or necessary to address security or abuse, as allowed by the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy. The current extension has no server-side collection or transfer path.

Donations And Third-Party Payment Services

LeftOff may provide an optional link to a third-party donation or payment service. Following that link is voluntary and takes you to a service operated under that provider's own privacy policy and terms. The payment provider, not LeftOff, collects and processes payment credentials.

LeftOff does not receive or store full payment-card or bank-account details and does not send saved passages, browsing activity, or restoration metadata to the payment provider. The provider may make limited transaction information available to the developer, such as the donation amount, payment status, and contact information you choose to provide. That information is used only to administer and acknowledge the donation and to meet applicable accounting or legal obligations.

Analytics

LeftOff does not currently use analytics, advertising trackers, or product telemetry in the extension or on this public website. Before introducing analytics, LeftOff will update this policy and any applicable Chrome Web Store disclosures to identify the provider, data collected, purpose, sharing, and retention. Any notice or consent required by applicable law or Chrome Web Store policy will be provided before collection begins.

Support And Data Controls

  • Delete one saved place from its item menu in the popup or archive.
  • Delete every saved place with Clear all in the popup.
  • Removing LeftOff or clearing its extension storage also removes its locally stored data from that Chrome profile.
  • Support and privacy questions can be sent to support@leftoff.io.

Scope And Limitations

  • LeftOff runs on normal http and https pages that match its content-script scope.
  • It does not run on restricted browser pages such as chrome://.
  • Restore quality may degrade on pages that substantially rewrite their DOM after the position was saved.

Changes To This Policy

LeftOff may update this policy when its features or data practices change. The updated policy will identify its effective date. Before a change introduces new data collection, sharing, or materially different use, LeftOff will update this policy and provide any additional notice or consent required by applicable law or Chrome Web Store policy.
